Holographic tarot cards carry a diffraction layer across the whole face of the card, so the colour moves as you lean over the spread instead of sitting still. It is the loudest finish we print and the one people most often come looking for after seeing a deck in a video. $34.99 to $59.99, all 78-card sets with a printed guidebook.

One true holographic deck, and three near neighbours

We would rather be exact than sell you the wrong thing. Only one deck here has the full diffraction face: the Holographic Crystal Foil. The other three are the finishes people usually mean when they search for holographic — gold rainbow foil worked into the linework, and a pearl lamination that shifts pink to silver. All four throw colour; they do it differently, and the difference is worth ten seconds of reading before you spend $34.99.

  • Full diffraction (holographic): the whole card face splits light into a rainbow. Strongest effect, most visible on camera, covers the artwork rather than tracing it.
  • Gold rainbow foil: metallic foil stamped along the drawn lines. The art stays readable; the shine follows the symbols. These also live in gold foil tarot cards.
  • Pearl lamination: a soft shift across the surface, no rainbow. Quietest of the three and the most forgiving in daylight.

The side-by-side is in best holographic tarot cards, and the question of whether the upgrade is worth it is answered honestly — including when it is not — in holographic versus regular tarot cards.

The decks

Holographic Crystal Foil Tarot Cards — 1909 Classic Art

A full diffraction layer across the whole card face, so colour moves across the spread as you lean over it. The strongest visual effect we print, over the 1909 illustrations. $34.99 for the deck and its printed guidebook; up to $59.99 for the set with the box, the reading cloth and the velvet bag.

Moonlight Tarot Cards Gold Rainbow Foil

Dark Forest original night-sky artwork on our heaviest black art card, with the same gold rainbow foil. The deck people write to us about most, and the one that photographs best under a lamp. $34.99 for the deck and its printed guidebook; up to $55.99 for the set with the box, the reading cloth and the velvet bag.

Gold Rainbow Foil Tarot Cards — 1909 Classic Art

The 1909 Pamela Colman Smith illustrations with gold rainbow foil on the linework, under anti-scratch lamination. Almost every tarot book and beginner course in English is written around these pictures, so whatever you read about a card describes the card in your hand. $34.99 for the deck and its printed guidebook; up to $59.99 for the set with the box, the reading cloth and the velvet bag.

Pink Moon Tarot Cards Plastic lamination

Plastic-laminated with a pink pearl finish — as durable as any deck we make and far gentler in tone. The one most often bought as a first deck. $34.99 for the deck and its printed guidebook; up to $59.99 for the set with the box, the reading cloth and the velvet bag.

What is in every box

Every deck on this page is a full 78-card tarot deck — 22 Major Arcana and four suits of 14 — printed by us, not resold. Every order includes a printed guidebook with the upright and reversed meaning of all 78 cards, so you can read on the first evening without buying a book first. The larger options add a rigid card box, a cotton reading cloth, a velvet bag, or all three; the option list on each deck's own page shows exactly what each one contains before you pay.

Who a holographic deck suits, and who it does not

It suits collectors, readers who film or photograph their spreads, and anyone who wants a deck that looks like an object rather than a tool. It suits gift buyers, because the effect survives being unwrapped in a lit room. It does not suit everyone: if you read long spreads for other people and need to hold attention on one card, the diffraction competes with you, and a matte deck such as Moon Magic does the job better. If you are buying a first deck to learn from, the 1909 editions in tarot decks for beginners are the safer purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between holographic and foil tarot cards?

Holographic is a diffraction layer across the whole card face — the colour shifts as you move. Foil is metallic and follows the drawn lines. Holographic is the bigger effect; foil keeps the artwork more readable. One deck here, the Holographic Crystal, has both.

Do holographic cards stick together when you shuffle?

Not these. The diffraction layer is under the same anti-scratch lamination as the rest of the range, so the surface that slides is lamination on lamination. A brand-new deck of any kind is stiff for the first few shuffles.

Can you read reversals on a holographic deck?

Yes. The 1909 illustrations underneath are unchanged, so upright and reversed read exactly as any book describes them. The printed guidebook covers both for all 78 cards.

How much is a holographic tarot deck?

From $34.99 for the deck with its guidebook to $59.99 for the full set with box, reading cloth and velvet bag.

Is there a cheaper way to get the effect?

A pearl-finish deck such as Pink Moon gives you a shifting surface at the same $34.99 starting price with a quieter result — and it is plastic-laminated, so it also survives being carried. The durable range is plastic tarot cards.
