At what age can a teenager try tarot? To our knowledge there is no official minimum age for drawing tarot cards: it depends on the teenager's maturity and on the framework you set. We suggest starting in the teenage years with a parent nearby, reading the cards as images to interpret and never as predictions.
Is there a minimum age for tarot?
Not that we know of. No official text or tradition sets an age for divinatory tarot, so the ages in this article are what we suggest, not thresholds. A word on terms: in France, tarot is also a trick-taking card game played with points. This article is about divinatory tarot, which is a tool for reflection, not an oracle.
A framework we suggest, by age
- Under about 10: no divinatory reading. Look at one card together and invent the story of what you see. A simple illustrated oracle or a board game is a better start.
- About 10 to 12: always with a parent. Describe the images, draw a card of the day, talk about what it evokes. No questions about the future, no readings for other people.
- About 13 to 15: together at first, then more and more alone, with questions about oneself.
- About 16 and over: autonomy with the same safeguards as an adult: no health questions, no serious decisions handed to the cards, no reading for a third party without consent.
What about the frightening cards?
Death, The Tower and The Devil are the cards parents worry about. In our reading they do not announce misfortune. Death is read as an ending and a passage; on the 1909 deck a skeleton in black armour rides forward, a sun rising on the horizon behind him. The Tower is a shake-up after which one can rebuild; on the 1909 deck lightning strikes a tower. The Devil is an attachment worth talking about; on the 1909 deck the chains look loose. Let the teenager describe the card first, then offer the reading. See our guide to the most negative tarot cards.
Tarot, oracle or card game?
An oracle deck usually has fewer cards and shorter messages, but it is not a tarot. Marseille tarot is the French tradition, with plain images, but its minor arcana have no scenes, which makes it more abstract to learn alone. A 1909-style tarot has a scene on every card, which is easy to describe and retell. A trick-taking tarot is a family game, not a reading tool. Any deck can teach you; our guide to tarot for beginners compares more options.
Starting together in five minutes
- Pick a calm moment, not right before an exam or after an argument.
- Ask an open question about yourself: "What could help me this week?"
- Shuffle and draw one card.
- Describe the image before reading the meaning: three things you see.
- Read the meaning, then write one sentence with the date.
Repeat with the card of the day for a few days. Our learn tarot on your own guide gives the full route.
Ground rules for kindness
Keep to questions about oneself, not health or death. Do not read for others without their consent. Draw once per question. We advise against paid online fortune-telling for a minor; see is tarot dangerous? for the real risks. If a teenager is going through a hard time, tarot is no substitute for your listening or for a professional; in France, 3114 (suicide prevention) and 119 (children at risk) answer day and night.
Giving a tarot deck to a teenager
A good idea if the wish comes from them. For a beginner who reads French, our French-language learning deck prints the meaning on every card, with a French booklet in the box and the full beginner course in French (4 books) is included, delivered by personal link after purchase. We do not present it as a game designed for children: it is a 78-card tarot for beginners, with the 1909 illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith. Marseille is a different tradition, and any deck can teach you.

Frequently asked questions
At what age can you draw tarot cards?
To our knowledge there is no official minimum age. We suggest the teenage years with a parent nearby, and an imagination game rather than a reading for younger children.
What is the difference between tarot and divinatory tarot?
Tarot is first a trick-taking card game with points. Divinatory tarot uses the cards as a tool for reflection: you read images, you do not win tricks.
Is tarot dangerous for a teenager?
The cards are not. The risks come from use: handing decisions to the cards, drawing again and again on one worry, or paying for fortune-telling. A framework set with you limits them.
Can my teen read cards for friends?
Under our framework, from about 16, if everyone agrees, with no predictions and no questions about health or bereavement.
