Which tarot spread works best for love questions? In the French tradition, beginners usually start with a four-card quick love layout: it shows where you stand, what is blocking you, what the recent past adds and where things are heading. Read in the divinatory tarot, it works as a mirror for how you live the relationship.
French-language tarot sites teach a handful of love layouts again and again. Here are four of them, with the position names as they are most often given. Variants exist, so treat them as a starting point rather than a rulebook. If you are brand new, our complete beginner guide comes first.
Start with the right question
The cards answer "what am I not seeing in this relationship?" far better than "what does he think of me?". Ask about yourself, about what is happening between you and about what you can do. Write the question down before you shuffle, and do not redraw on the same question until you get an answer you like. Good examples: "What is stopping me from moving forward in this relationship?" or "What attitude would help me meet this person calmly?". A written question keeps you honest, and it gives you something to compare with the cards a week later.
Four love layouts from the French tradition
1. The quick love reading (4 cards)
The best entry point. Position 1 is the covered card: you and the general mood of the question. Position 2 gives the main blockages, 3 the recent past influences, and 4 the possible outcome if nothing changes.
2. The point of view (5 cards)
Often done with the major arcana only. Cards stand for how you see your partner, how your partner sees you, how you see the relationship, how your partner sees it, and finally what you both need to know.
3. The true love layout (6 cards)
You, your partner, the qualities that unite you, the strengths of the relationship, the weaknesses and questions to raise, and a final card asking whether the bond can flourish and what must be resolved first.
4. The interrelational layout (6 cards)
The French answer to "what does this person think of me?". Positions cover how they see themselves in the relationship, how they see you, their immediate intentions, what they expect, what they fear and their plan with you. No layout reads a mind: you are looking at your own perception, which is a good basis for an honest conversation.
How to read a love layout
Look at the whole before the details. Many Cups point to emotions, many Swords to words and tension, Wands to desire and drive, Pentacles (Deniers in Marseille) to daily life and commitment. Court cards often stand for people. The Lovers (VI) speaks of a choice and shared values rather than guaranteed romance. For fuller meanings, see our love card meanings and the Lovers card guide. Reversed cards usually show blocked or inward energy, not disaster.
Can a love layout tell your future? Only as a tendency, and one you can change. For a horizon of a few weeks, see the French near-future spread. For more layouts in English, try our spreads for love, career and daily guidance.
A deck that lets you read these layouts in French
If you are learning tarot in French, our French-language learning deck puts the meaning on every card, so you can follow each position without opening a book. It uses the 1909 illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith, a printed French booklet comes in the box, and the full French course follows by personal link after purchase. Honest note: the Marseille tradition is different, with no scenes on the minor arcana, and you can learn with any deck. This one simply removes the constant looking-up.

What is the easiest love tarot spread?
The four-card quick love reading: the covered card, the blockages, the recent past and the possible outcome.
Can tarot tell what someone feels about me?
Not literally. A layout like the interrelational spread reflects how you perceive the situation, which helps you prepare a real conversation rather than guess.
Which card means love in tarot?
The Lovers is the best-known one, but the Two of Cups, the Ace of Cups, the Ten of Cups and the Empress also speak of connection and emotional fulfilment.
