Card guides & what the lines mean
  • Solid outline: cut line. The card is trimmed to 70 × 120 mm.
  • Dashed inner rectangle: safe area. Keep significant text and imagery inside it.
  • Outer page edge: extent of the background. Fill the 2 mm strip outside the cut line.

The guides show a rectangular safe area; they do not define the final corner radius. We confirm the corner shape and how fronts and backs should be supplied with New Media before production.

  1. Save separate copies for your fronts and back.
  2. Add images and text; extend the background over the full page.
  3. Hide the guides, export a review copy and check its dimensions.

  1. Keep the page, folds, notch, flaps and glue panel unchanged.
  2. Place artwork on the design layer; fill the background across the full sheet.
  3. Check the text direction on a paper assembly at 100% scale.
Reading the folding-box template

Panel A has the finger notch. Panel B connects to the upper lid. The narrow panels are the sides; the narrow outside flap is for gluing. Main-panel text faces toward the upper flaps.

Solid pink contours mark cuts; dashed orange lines mark folds. Dashed green rectangles indicate conservative text areas on the four main panels. No ready-made safe area is assigned to the other flaps.

This template preserves the supplied fl.pdf construction: 40 cut contours and 11 fold lines. Do not resize, redraw or move that geometry. Keep the artwork separate from it. The sheet is larger than A4: do not use “fit to page” for a paper assembly.

Box fit depends on the card stock, finish and included components. We confirm the chosen combination before manufacturing.

03 / LID-AND-BASE BOX

Two pieces. One complete design.

Download the base and cover separately. Each has its own original geometry and sheet size.

The central-panel dimensions are measurements of the flat dielines, not guaranteed internal dimensions of the assembled box. Preserve the original large margins and 1:1 scale.

How to use the two pieces
  1. Edit the base and lid as separate files. Never create one by scaling the other.
  2. Place the main design on the central panel and continue the background across the original sheet. Check side-panel text with a paper assembly.
  3. Save your editable sources, then hide guides and source geometry for the artwork export.

The original AI contains the BASE and COVER sheets, even though its original name refers to “78 cards”. That name does not guarantee fit for every 78-card stack.

The original coloured lines are preserved, but their detailed manufacturing legend is still to be confirmed. Do not interpret a blue line as bleed or a safe boundary. The added text guide is a separate dashed inset, 4 mm inside the central panel. Card thickness, lamination, inserts and the technical-line instructions are checked with New Media before manufacture.

MAKE IT YOURS

From a blank template to your artwork.

The supplied SVG files were opened and exported in Inkscape 1.4.4. This is the checked editing route for this kit.

  1. Save your own copy

    Open the SVG in Inkscape. Choose File → Save As, give it a new name and keep the Inkscape SVG format. Leave the downloaded original untouched.

  2. Keep the real size

    Open File → Document Properties. Check the page dimensions in millimetres against the template. Keep scale at 1:1; do not resize the page to the drawing or add another bleed margin.

  3. Find the artwork layers

    Open Object → Layers and Objects. Work on ФОН (background) or ДИЗАЙН (design). Leave technical and guide layers locked. The layer-name key below translates the original labels.

  4. Add your images & text

    Use File → Import and choose Embed. Replace the grey placeholders, preserve image proportions and use 300 dpi at the actual placed size. Select a text object with the Text tool to replace its wording.

  5. Fill the background

    Extend card backgrounds to the full 74 × 124 mm page. For boxes, cover the entire original sheet so colour continues over sides and flaps; keep the construction unchanged. Check text stays away from cuts, notches and folds.

  6. Save, hide & export

    Keep an editable SVG. Hide guide and technical layers with their eye icons and remove unused placeholders. Choose File → Save a Copy → PDF, export the full page, convert text to paths and use 300 dpi for raster effects. Reopen the PDF and check the page size.

Replacing the grey image placeholders

Import and embed your image. Lock its width-to-height ratio and enlarge it proportionally to cover the placeholder. To crop, bring the placeholder rectangle above the image, select both and use Object → Clip → Set Clip. The rectangle becomes the crop mask. Delete any unused grey placeholders.

The supplied guide PDFs are RGB reference exports. Neither these nor the geometry PDFs replace your final artwork.

Preserving your source while exporting PDF

Save an SVG first, then use Save a Copy for PDF. Export the page rather than the drawing selection so the margins remain intact. Keep technical geometry separately and provide it only in the form agreed with New Media.

Inkscape PDF export verifies your layout; an ordinary RGB export is not automatically a production-ready CMYK file. Colour conversion and the final PDF settings need a separate preflight.

You can develop your artwork in Canva, Photoshop or Affinity, or use AI to explore a visual direction. The supplied technical template remains the foundation for the final layout.

Canva

Create card art, backgrounds and typography, then bring your artwork into the checked SVG workflow. For a full card image, work to 74 × 124 mm including bleed. Measure the exported file; do not add a second automatic bleed.

This kit’s layered SVG round trip through Canva has not been verified. Use Inkscape for the box geometry.

Photoshop

Prepare card images and box artwork at their real physical size. Check image dimensions and 300 dpi at the placed size, then place the artwork into the unchanged template. Keep a layered working copy.

Affinity / Illustrator

Use your preferred vector workflow if you can preserve the page size, layers and geometry. The original lid-and-base AI is included for Illustrator. Verify imported artwork and the exported PDF against the technical reference.

These editor routes have not been tested with this kit. Do not assume every import keeps the source unchanged.

Use AI for the artwork, then fit it to the real box.

Start with your own card art and ask for a coordinated background or packaging concept. Add the approved images and exact wording to the editable template. Check spelling, details and resolution, and keep the original cuts and folds untouched.

An AI picture of a beautiful box is a visual concept. It does not contain the verified dieline needed to manufacture it.

Helpful answers

What size should my tarot card artwork be?

For these New Media templates, the finished tarot card is 70 × 120 mm. Add 2 mm bleed on every side: the full artwork page is 74 × 124 mm. Keep important text and symbols inside the 62 × 112 mm safe area, 4 mm inside the cut line. Bleed is outside the cut line; the safe margin is inside it.

Which tarot box templates can I download?

The kit includes a standard folding box and a two-piece lid-and-base box. The folding box uses the supplied original dieline. The two-piece box has separate editable SVG files for BASE and COVER, plus the original Illustrator AI source and technical reference PDFs.

Which file should I edit?

Use SVG for editable text, artwork and layers. Inkscape is the tested SVG editing route. The AI file is the original Illustrator source for the lid and base. PDFs with labels help you view and check the template; technical PDFs preserve the original geometry. Keep your own editable copy before exporting artwork.

Can I use Canva, Photoshop, Affinity or AI artwork?

You can create artwork in your preferred editor and place it into the template. Preserve the document dimensions and dieline at 1:1 scale. Import, layers and print export differ between programs: check the exported result instead of assuming that every editor preserves the template or produces suitable CMYK files. AI can help create artwork; it does not replace the supplied geometry or the final file check.

What do I check before exporting?

Keep a separate editable master. Extend the background to cover the required bleed, embed images and keep important content clear of cuts and folds. Hide guidance and technical geometry for the artwork export, keeping technical lines separately as agreed. New Media requires 1:1 scale, CMYK, raster images at 300 dpi at placed size and outlined text; the shop specifies PDF without embedded colour profiles or imposed sheets. Check the exported file before submitting it.

What still needs to be confirmed with New Media?

Confirm the card corner radius, how card faces and backs should be supplied, and whether the chosen box suits the complete deck thickness. The coloured lines in the lid-and-base original do not yet have a detailed confirmed production legend. Do not interpret a cyan line as bleed or a safe area. Central-panel measurements are not guaranteed internal box dimensions.
