Is the Tarot de Marseille good for beginners?
Honestly, it depends on your starting point. The Marseille is a more demanding system for people brand new to tarot because the Minor Arcana use pip cards (geometric suit symbols) rather than illustrated scenes. Most tarot books and courses today are written for the Rider-Waite-Smith system, so fewer beginner resources apply directly to Marseille. If you are completely new to tarot, our Smith-Waite Borderless Vintage is the more practical first deck. If you already have some tarot experience and want to explore the older tradition, the Marseille is a genuinely rewarding choice.
What are pip cards and how are they different from illustrated cards?
In the Marseille system, the Minor Arcana cards (numbered 1 through 10 in each suit) show only geometric arrangements of the suit symbols: a Five of Batons shows five batons arranged in a pattern, not a scene of people fighting. This is how tarot looked before Arthur Waite commissioned illustrated Minor Arcana in 1909. Reading pip cards requires more reliance on numerology, suit meanings, and card position in a spread. Many experienced readers find this approach more precise and less suggestive than illustrated decks.
What suits does this deck use?
The Tarot de Marseille uses the traditional European suit names: Batons, Cups, Swords, and Coins. These correspond roughly to Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles in the Rider-Waite system. The Major Arcana card names are also slightly different from modern decks in some cases (for example, La Papesse instead of The High Priestess, Le Mat for The Fool).
