Most Negative Tarot Cards: 10 Cards That Scare Beginners

Tarot avec significations en français – Dark Forest Tarot

What is the most negative card in tarot? The Tower (XVI), Death (XIII), The Devil (XV) and the Ten of Swords are among the ones people most often mention. None is a curse, though: in divinatory tarot these cards describe a tension or the end of a cycle, and their meaning depends on your question and on their position.

This is the English companion to our French article on the cards that frighten beginners most. Numbering follows the 1909 tradition (Strength VIII, Justice XI); the Tarot de Marseille swaps them and calls The Tower La Maison Dieu and Death the Arcane sans nom.

The 10 cards that scare people most

  1. The Tower (XVI). It speaks of a structure that holds poorly and can point to a sudden questioning. Constructive reading: the break clears the ground, so ask what was already unstable.
  2. Death (XIII). It speaks of an ending and of what that ending frees, a cycle that closes and a transformation under way, not a bereavement. Ask what has to end for the next chapter to start.
  3. The Devil (XV). It points to an attachment or habit that holds you back; seeing what binds you is the first step to loosening it.
  4. The Ten of Swords. It can mark the lowest point of an ordeal.
  5. The Three of Swords. A sorrow or painful truth; naming it helps you get through it.
  6. The Nine of Swords. Anxiety and night-time rumination; talk about it and bring the fears back to the facts.
  7. The Moon (XVIII). Blur and illusion; keep moving without guessing everything.
  8. The Five of Pentacles (Deniers in Marseille). Scarcity and exclusion; help is often within reach if you dare to ask.
  9. The Eight of Swords. Feeling stuck, usually by one's own limits; they are often looser than they look.
  10. The Hanged Man (XII). A forced pause and a change of viewpoint; the situation cannot be pushed.

Positive or negative? Three questions

Before labelling a card, check three things: the question you asked, the position of the card in the spread, and whether it is upright or reversed. The Tower can sound like a shock for "is my relationship fine?" but a release for "how do I get out of a situation that suffocates me?". For the opposite list, see the most positive tarot cards, and for how to read several cards together, see how to interpret a tarot reading.

What to do when you draw a hard card

Breathe: a card describes a dynamic, it does not announce an event. Look at the image, link it to your question and look for one small step. Remember that a dark card does not say what will happen: it puts words on a tension you may already feel. If a reading frightens you, stop and come back later; for health, legal or money questions, see a professional. If you wonder whether tarot is safe at all, read is tarot dangerous?.

To read hard cards calmly, this French-language edition of the learning deck prints the meaning on every card. A printed French booklet comes in the box, and the full French course follows by personal link after purchase. The cards follow the 1909 illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Death card mean someone will die?

No. In divinatory tarot, Death speaks of a cycle ending and of transformation. It does not predict a death.

What does The Hanged Man mean in love?

A relationship on hold, a time of waiting or stepping back. It invites you to change your viewpoint before deciding, and it describes a pause, not a break-up or a shared future.

Should I redraw after a difficult card?

It is better to keep the card and look at what it lights up. If you feel anxious, take a break rather than drawing again for a nicer answer.
