Giving a Tarot Deck to a Beginner: Six Checks Before You Buy

Tarot avec significations en français – Dark Forest Tarot

Which tarot deck should you give a beginner? Give a 78-card divinatory tarot with the meaning printed on the cards and a guidebook in the reader's own language, rather than a beautiful but mute deck. First check that the person really wants to try, and that the deck is for reading, not for playing card games.

Does this person really want a tarot deck?

This is the first question and the one most often skipped. A tarot deck is a gift that asks for time: handling the cards, learning to read the images, writing a little. Given to someone who has never shown curiosity, it ends up in a drawer. Signs of real interest: they have talked about tarot, watch videos or use a drawing app, borrowed a deck from a friend, or ask what the cards mean. If you are unsure, ask. And present the gift for what it is: a tool for reflection, not an oracle.

The cards to learn on

You can read about tarot for a month and still freeze when you hold the cards. A real deck gives you something to practise on.

Every deck comes with an electronic (PDF) guidebook for all 78 cards, upright and reversed. White 350 gsm card, matte, borderless; made to be shuffled badly while you learn.

Six checks before you buy

  1. Divinatory, not a card game. In French, "jeu de tarot" also means a trick-taking card game played in a group. Look for the word "divinatory" or the arcana and suit names (major arcana, wands, cups, swords, coins or pentacles) on the product page.
  2. Meaning on the cards, or a solid booklet. For a beginner this is the most useful criterion. Printed meaning summarises the card; it does not replace practice, but it removes the first obstacle.
  3. The guidebook's language. Some decks ship with a booklet in another language only.
  4. Tradition and images. A scene-based deck is read from the pictures; a Marseille deck leans on symbols and colours, with no scenes on the minor arcana. Observe the person's taste.
  5. Handling. 78 cards are bulky; check the format for small hands or travel.
  6. Delivery. Check that the shop ships to your country and leave a margin before the date.

Which type for which beginner

There is no best deck in itself. A scene-based tarot with the meaning printed on the cards suits someone who wants to learn alone without opening a book for every card; its limit is that 78 cards are a lot, and printed meaning does not replace practice. A Marseille deck suits someone drawn to tradition and symbols; the learning curve is steeper at first. An oracle suits someone put off by 78 cards, but each oracle has its own logic. See our oracle versus tarot guide and our list of tarot gifts.

What to avoid, and what to add

Avoid a deck without any reading aid, a fragile collector's deck for a first time, several decks at once, a deck in a language the person does not read, and a note that promises destiny. Add a note with a first exercise: one card, three sentences, one evening (our card of the day method), a small notebook (journaling guide), and the freedom to try or not. For a full path, point them to learning tarot on your own.

A deck made for the first steps

Our French-language learning deck (ships to the EU, UK, Switzerland and Iceland only) has 78 cards with the 1909 illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith. On every card are printed the name and number, a one-sentence meaning, four upright keywords, four reversed keywords and a question to ask yourself. the full French guidebook comes as a PDF by personal link after purchase. It is a gift for someone who reads French; any deck can teach, but this one removes the "look it up in the book" step.

Frequently asked questions

Which tarot should I give a beginner?

A divinatory 78-card tarot with printed meanings and a guidebook in their language. Check the tradition (scenes or Marseille) and that they are curious about tarot.

Is it bad luck to buy your own deck?

It is a belief passed between readers, not a rule of tarot. If it matters to the person, giving the deck is a lovely gesture; otherwise nothing stops them buying it. See do you have to be gifted a tarot deck.

Can I give a tarot deck to someone who does not believe in it?

Yes, if you present it as a tool for reflection, without promises.

What is the most reliable tarot deck?

Reliability does not depend on the deck: every tarot is a tool for reflection. What varies is how readable it is for a beginner.
