French Twelve Houses Tarot Spread: Your Year in 12 Cards

Tarot avec significations en français – Dark Forest Tarot

What is the twelve houses tarot spread? It is a circle of twelve cards, one for each main area of life, borrowed from astrology: identity, money, home, work, relationships. French tarot readers use it as a yearly overview in divinatory tarot, and it needs no specific question.

Here are the layout, the twelve positions and how to read them. If you are new to tarot, start with our complete beginner guide.

How to lay out the twelve cards

Shuffle, cut, then place twelve cards in a circle. In the most common layout you go counter-clockwise, starting at the 9 o'clock position on a clock face. Card one is on the left, card two just below it, and card twelve ends just above the first. Use the full deck, or do a first round with the major arcana and a second with the minor arcana. You can cover each card with one to three more for nuance, but one card per house is plenty to begin.

The twelve houses

  1. Self and identity
  2. Resources and money
  3. Learning, communication, close circle
  4. Home and family
  5. Creativity, children and projects, romance, pleasure
  6. Daily work and habits
  7. Relationships, partnerships, contracts
  8. Crises, transformation, inheritance, shared money
  9. Spirituality, travel, horizons
  10. Career and public image
  11. Friends, community, hopes and wishes
  12. Secrets, self-sabotage, hidden fears

In the most widespread French version, the houses follow the zodiac from Aries to Pisces, and each carries an element and a suit: fire with Wands, earth with Pentacles (the Marseille Deniers), air with Swords, water with Cups. Astrology has several house systems, so treat this as a reading frame, not a hard rule. No astrology knowledge is needed: you can read each house simply as a life theme. To explore links between cards and signs, see our guide to the tarot card for your zodiac sign.

How to read it

Read in three passes. First the overall picture: how many major arcana, which suit dominates. Then the groupings: houses 1, 5 and 9 are fire, 2, 6 and 10 earth, 3, 7 and 11 air, 4, 8 and 12 water. Last, each house in its own theme. A Three of Swords in house 4 does not say the same thing as in house 10. You can read the circle in the present, as a psychological check-up, or toward the future, as divination. Decide before you begin.

When you want a narrower question, a shorter layout works better, such as the seven-card horseshoe or the Celtic Cross. We suggest once or twice a year for the twelve houses. Notes help: see our tarot journaling guide.

A short worked example

Three houses taken from an imaginary circle: the Eight of Pentacles in house 2 (patient work on your skills, and a relationship to money and work built step by step), Strength in house 6 (daily courage, gentleness that lasts), and The Moon in house 12 (vague fears, things not yet faced). A possible reading: you are building steadily, on real inner strength, with a worry in the background worth naming rather than avoiding. It is an illustration only. Houses mean something when read together, so never draw a conclusion from one card.

What if a house worries you?

A hard card in a sensitive house, such as home or relationships, is not a verdict. Ask what the card invites you to look at, and if you wish draw a single advice card for that house instead of redoing the whole circle. House twelve deserves gentleness, since it speaks of what we hide, sometimes from ourselves. If a situation really weighs on you, talk to someone close or a professional: tarot is not a substitute for support.

A deck that lets you read it in French

Twelve cards means twelve meanings to find. If you are learning in French, our French-language learning deck prints the meaning on each card. It uses the 1909 illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith, a printed French booklet comes in the box, and the full French course follows by personal link after purchase. Marseille is a different tradition, with no scenes on the minor arcana, and you can learn with any deck. This one saves you the looking-up.
