Developing Intuition with Tarot: A French 21-Day Plan

Tarot avec significations en français – Dark Forest Tarot

How do you develop intuition with tarot? The French approach is simple: draw one card a day, describe what you see before you look anything up, and write down in the evening what actually happened. In French, tarot used for reflection is called tarot divinatoire, and French teachers treat intuition largely as a skill that can be trained.

What "intuition" really means at the table

When a French reader talks about l'intuition, they usually mean very ordinary things: a detail in the picture that catches the eye, an emotion that arrives before any meaning, an association ("this figure reminds me of..."), sometimes a bodily reaction. Your memory and attention work faster than your reasoning. Whether you see a gift or trained attention, the method is the same, and it can be practised. We explain the "gift" question in our article do you need a gift to read tarot.

Five techniques French tutors keep coming back to

  1. Describe before you interpret. For one minute, say or write only what you see: colours, posture, gaze, objects. No meaning yet.
  2. Note the first word. Let one word or emotion arrive in ten seconds and write it down without correcting it.
  3. Tell the card as a scene. What happened just before? What happens next? Cards with a scene on every card (the 1909 tradition) make this easy; in a Marseille deck the numbered minor cards have no scene, so lean on numbers and colours.
  4. Listen to your body. Where do you feel something? It is not a diagnosis, only another clue to name an emotion.
  5. Tie the card to a concrete question. "If this card were about my day, what would it point out?" Answer in three sentences.

The rule behind all five: you first, the book second.

A 21-day plan

Ten minutes a day, at the same hour, with a plain notebook (see tarot journaling for beginners).

  • Week 1, look: one card of the day (the French carte du jour habit, covered in our card-of-the-day guide). One-minute description, then the first word. No books.
  • Week 2, connect: a three-card spread. Describe each card, then tell the short story the three form in the order they fell.
  • Week 3, check: same card of the day. In the evening, reread your note, write what the card lit up in your day, and only then compare your first word with the classic meaning.

On day 21, reread the whole notebook and underline the words that come back: they are the beginning of your personal vocabulary.

Where a French-language deck helps

Week 3 works best when you can check the meaning instantly. Our French-language learning deck has the meaning printed on every card, and its illustrations are the 1909 designs by Pamela Colman Smith. A printed French booklet is in the box, and the full French course follows by personal link after purchase. You can learn with any deck; this one simply removes the "look it up in the book" step.

Intuition, hope or fear?

Hope and fear are insistent and repetitive; an intuitive impression is usually short, calm and attached to a detail, and it accepts being proved wrong. Write the impression down before checking, then compare with real events a few days later. That is a useful test.

What intuition does not replace

Tarot is a tool for personal reflection. It is not a substitute for a doctor, a lawyer or a financial adviser. For a structured path, read our 30-day plan to learn tarot on your own.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a gift to have intuition with tarot?

No. You need attention, a few reference points and regular practice. If you believe in a gift, the method still works, because it rests on observation and a notebook.

Which deck helps develop intuition?

The one whose images speak to you. Cards with a scene on every card give you more to describe, while Marseille decks train the eye for symbols and numbers. A deck with meanings printed on the cards, such as our French-language edition, lets you check without breaking your focus.

How long before I see progress?

It varies from person to person. Twenty-one days is long enough to see patterns appear in your notebook, but no result can be promised.

How can I tell intuition from imagination?

Write the impression before you look up the meaning, then compare it with events a few days later. A brief, calm impression tied to a detail is more useful than an insistent thought that repeats what you already hope or fear.
