A tarot bag is a small drawstring pouch that keeps a deck clean and protected between readings. For a standard 78-card deck, choose a soft velvet or linen bag of about 5 by 3.5 inches, and add a wooden box if you want rigid protection against crushing.
If you want one bag that suits almost any deck, start with the Black and Gold Velvet Tarot Bag, shown below.

See this bagWhat a tarot bag actually protects against
A loose deck in a handbag or backpack meets keys, coins, pens and loose dust. The first things to go are the card edges, which soften and fray, and the surface, which picks up scratches and scuffs. A bag puts a soft layer between the cards and everything else.
It is worth being clear about the limits. A fabric pouch does not keep water out, and it will not save cards from a spilled drink or a flooded bag. Our decks are laminated, which helps against everyday handling, and a bag adds a second layer of protection on top of that. If moisture is your main worry, read our guide to laminated tarot cards and moisture.
A matching colour per deck also makes it easy to find the right deck on a shelf.
Velvet tarot bag or linen pouch: what to choose
Most tarot bags close with a drawstring. It is simple, it has no hardware that can break, and it lets you open the bag fully to slide the deck out.
The fabric changes how the bag looks and feels. Here is how the four stand-alone bags we sell compare. All four are drawstring pouches of the same size, so the choice comes down to material and colour.
| Bag | Material | Look | Care | Pairs well with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black and Gold Velvet | Soft velvet | Black with gold cord, quiet and versatile | Spot clean with a damp cloth | Moonlight Tarot |
| Red and Gold Velvet | Soft velvet | Deep crimson with gold detailing | Spot clean with a damp cloth | Moon Magic Tarot |
| Pink Velvet | Soft velvet | Warm blush pink | Spot clean with a damp cloth | Pink Moon Tarot |
| Vintage Linen | Natural linen | Vintage print, muted antique tones | Hand wash cold, lay flat to dry | Borderless Vintage Tarot and Tarot de Marseille (EU and UK) |
Velvet is dense and soft, so it cushions the cards against knocks without adding weight. It also looks formal, which many readers enjoy for a ritual feel. Black velvet absorbs light and reads as understated, while red and pink are more decorative.
Linen has a more natural, textured feel. It is breathable and durable, holds its shape well, and develops a slight patina with use. It suits traditional decks, such as a Marseille-style deck or a vintage 1909 classic art deck. Linen is slightly more breathable than velvet, which some readers prefer for long-term storage.
One honest note on lining. Our product pages do not describe a separate inner lining for these bags, so we do not claim one. If an inner lining matters to you, check the product description of any bag you are considering before you buy.
Size: will your 78-card deck fit?
A standard tarot card measures about 7 by 12 cm (roughly 2.75 by 4.7 inches). Our stand-alone bags are 5 by 3.5 by 2 inches, which is sized for the loose cards of a standard 78-card deck. Every Dark Forest deck fits, and so do most other standard tarot-sized decks. A velvet bag that comes inside a deck set is larger, at 7.8 by 5.9 inches.
The key detail is that the bag fits the cards, not the retail box. If your deck comes in a large rigid gift box, you take the cards out of the box and put them in the bag. The same applies to the guidebook. A thick guidebook adds bulk, so most readers keep it on the shelf and carry only the cards.
If you own a deck with unusually large or oversized cards, measure before you buy. A bag cut for standard cards will be too tight for them. A bag that is slightly roomy is easy to live with, but one that is too small will bend the card corners every time you pack it.
Bag, wooden box, or both
A bag and a box protect against different things. A bag is soft and light, so it is the better choice for a handbag or travel. A rigid box protects the cards from crushing and keeps them flat, which matters if a bag might sit under other items.
Our wooden tarot box is solid wood with a friction lid and no latch, and it protects the cards from dust and from the bottom of a bag. For a full comparison of box types, see our wooden tarot box buying guide.
Many readers use both: the deck sits in the box at home and travels in the bag, or the box goes inside a larger bag for the heaviest protection. If you only want one, pick the bag for portability and the box for a permanent home on a shelf or altar.
Bag and cloth sets for readers who carry a deck
If you read away from home, at a friend's table or a market stall, you carry two things: the cards and something to lay them on. A cloth keeps the cards off an unknown surface and makes a spread easier to read.
That is why we offer matched sets. The Black Gold Bag and Cloth Set pairs the black velvet bag with an 18 by 18 inch gabardine reading cloth, large enough for a full ten-card Celtic Cross. There is also a Pink Bag and Cloth Set in the same size. The bag and cloth share one palette, so they look like a set. The deck is sold separately.

Care and storage
Care depends on the fabric. Our velvet bags should be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and not machine washed. The linen bag can be washed by hand in cold water and laid flat to dry, but not tumble dried. The gabardine cloth in our sets can be hand washed or washed gently in a machine on cold, then laid flat to dry.
Whatever bag you use, a few habits help. Make sure your hands and the cards are dry before you put the deck away. Keep the bag away from direct sun and damp rooms. Store the deck flat or upright rather than squeezed under heavy items. For more on keeping a deck in good shape over years, see how to store tarot cards.
Tarot bag FAQ
What size bag do I need for a 78-card tarot deck?
A standard tarot card is about 7 by 12 cm (roughly 2.75 by 4.7 inches), so look for a bag around 5 by 3.5 inches or larger. Our stand-alone bags are 5 by 3.5 by 2 inches and fit the loose cards of every Dark Forest deck.
Do I need a tarot bag?
A bag is not required, but it keeps card edges from fraying and the surface from scratching when a deck travels in a handbag or backpack. For a deck that stays on a shelf, a box is enough.
Is velvet or linen better for tarot cards?
Both protect the deck well. Velvet is soft and looks formal, and linen is textured, durable and slightly more breathable. Choose by the look you like and the deck you own.
Does a tarot bag protect my cards from water?
No. A fabric pouch protects against dust, scratches and knocks, not against liquid. Keep the deck away from spills and damp, and dry it fully if it does get wet.
How do I clean a velvet tarot bag?
For our velvet bags, spot clean with a damp cloth and do not machine wash. Let the bag dry fully before you put the cards back inside.
